Growing the UWG MPAcc
The MPAcc is already here. The question is whether students can find it, understand it, and enter it.
What a national look at accounting master’s programs suggests for West Georgia, and what we should verify before changing anything.

The Opportunity
We do not need to invent a degree.
Discover
A prospect should meet one name, one modality, and one reason to look closer.
Understand
The first screen should answer who the program is for, delivery format, length, estimated cost, next start, and how it relates to Georgia’s 2026 CPA pathways.
Enter
Accounting majors already at UWG and working professionals outside the current pipeline need different entry paths.
The immediate work is the front door, not a new curriculum.
UGA’s online MPAcc is fully online and asynchronous, is designed for working professionals without an accounting education, and comprises 36 credits.
What the Public Record Shows at UWG
Five frictions appear before a prospect ever meets the department.
UWG public pages use several variants of the degree name and abbreviation.
The degree directory and AACSB listing describe the MPAcc as face-to-face, while the tuition schedule also contains an MBA/MPAcc Online-NET category.
Georgia’s licensure rules changed effective January 1, 2026. The public program page still centers the traditional 150-hour explanation rather than the full current pathway set.
The public landing page does not lead with audience, delivery, length, estimated cost, or next start.
Admission requires an accounting GPA based on at least 9 hours of upper-division accounting courses. No public bridge is stated for applicants who lack them.
A National Market
Programs were chosen by design model, not by ranking.
UConn
Fully online asynchronous delivery since 2003; more than 1,950 graduates over 25 years.
Illinois Gies
Fully online iMSA ecosystem with Performance-based Admissions Track, non-degree entry, and stackable graduate certificates.
Arizona State
Online MACC and Data Analytics with live evening classes, one- or two-year pacing, non-accounting pathways, and Becker CPA Review support.
Rutgers
One 30-credit program with accounting, other-business, and AI curriculum options; online and in-person formats; recurring online information sessions.
Boise State
30-credit accelerated MSA for accounting graduates plus a separate online Foundations route for non-accounting graduates; fall, spring, and summer admission.
UWF
Returned the MAcc and prerequisite undergraduate courses to online delivery; added multiple specializations; reports increased reach and enrollment.
One Useful Case: University of West Florida
UWF shows what can happen when access, prerequisites, and differentiation are redesigned together.
What UWF changed
- Returned the MAcc to an online format and put prerequisite undergraduate accounting courses online as well.
- Built distinct specializations, including Analytics, Business Analysis and Reporting, Information Systems and Controls, and Taxation.
- Allows a maximum of 6 credit hours of CPA Review coursework to count toward graduation requirements.
- Reports a 17% MAcc enrollment increase in its most recent published academic-year comparison.
What UWG can study
- Removing the delivery barrier works better when the prerequisite barrier is addressed too.
- Named specializations give students a clearer reason to choose one program over another.
- CPA preparation can connect graduate coursework more directly to a professional outcome.
Use UWF as one operating model, then test the same ideas against UWG's own students, faculty capacity, and enrollment data.
What Repeats
Not “put it online.” Redesign the journey.
Access
A stated modality and a way in for students who are not already in Carrollton.
Two doors
A clean accounting-major path and a separate route for qualified non-accounting applicants.
Pacing
More than one start or more than one completion pace.
A reason
Analytics, AI, CPA preparation, or another named differentiator.
A person
Information sessions, coaches, recruiters, or assigned human follow-up.
A try-before
Certificate, non-degree course, early graduate credit, or another lower-risk starting point.
The Pattern, at a Glance
Public features show a pattern.
A blank means not found on a public page, not that the feature does not exist.
The gap is not one missing feature. It is the student journey.
A Working Hypothesis, Not a Decision
Different students need different doors.
Qualified accounting students should hear about the MPAcc early, receive a credit map, and know the value proposition before senior year.
UWG’s public admissions criteria require at least 9 hours of upper-division accounting coursework for the accounting GPA calculation and publish no bridge path for applicants who lack that preparation.
The second lane requires a faculty, curriculum, capacity, and accreditation decision.
Next reveals Lane 2.
The MPAcc 10: Grow What We Already Have
Proposed actions 1 to 5Five actions can improve the funnel before a curriculum redesign.
One Program, One Message.
Set one official name, one abbreviation, one modality statement, and one canonical webpage.
Own the UWG Pipeline.
Build an intentional path from undergraduate accounting awareness to Double Wolf eligibility, an individual credit map, and a senior MPAcc conversation.
Build an Inquiry Engine.
Run a recurring 30-minute information session, provide a simple inquiry path, assign human follow-up, and measure conversion.
Make the Value Obvious.
Put audience, modality, credits, time, estimated cost, next start, 2026 Georgia CPA pathways, analytics value, and career relevance on the first screen.
Manage the Funnel.
Track awareness, inquiry, session attendance, application, admission, enrollment, persistence, and completion. Set enrollment targets only after the baseline is known.
The MPAcc 10: Build the Program People Can Choose
Proposed actions 6 to 10Five strategic decisions could make the degree accessible to a larger market.
Make Geography Optional.
Evaluate a clearly defined fully online or intentionally hybrid pathway, including sequencing, capacity, accreditation, and cost.
Create a Second Door.
Study a foundation or bridge route for qualified finance, business, and career-changing applicants who do not already have the required upper-level accounting preparation.
Make Every Start Real.
Turn fall, spring, and summer admission windows into predictable progression maps, with part-time pacing where academically and operationally feasible.
Own Accounting + Analytics + CPA Preparation.
Make existing analytics content visible and job-linked. Evaluate CPA preparation integration only through normal faculty and curriculum approval.
Build Employer Reach.
Develop relationships with regional firms, corporate accounting teams, banks, government employers, and alumni for recruiting, tuition assistance, information sessions, and referrals.
These are options to evaluate. Each depends on faculty capacity, curriculum review, accreditation, university approval, and financial analysis.
Measure the Funnel, Then Pilot
Enrollment is the last number, not the first.
Pull five years of headcount, applications, admits, enrollment, and student origin before setting a target.
Make MPAcc awareness deliberate in accounting and finance courses and measure awareness before and after.
Run a recurring virtual information session for two terms and track registration, attendance, inquiry follow-up, and application conversion.
At the end of the pilot, faculty decide whether a formal online path or bridge proposal is worth developing.
The Ask
Validate the opportunity before changing the program.
- Pull five years of applications, admits, enrollment, and student origin.
- Ask current students why they do or do not choose the MPAcc.
- Confirm faculty capacity and any accreditation or approval constraint on modality.
- Test the highest-leverage front-door changes and measure the result.
- Use the evidence to decide which parts of the MPAcc 10 deserve a formal proposal.
Happy to help gather the public comparisons. The internal numbers and academic decisions belong to the department.
